Balance Disorders

Balance is a complicated function of the body. It involves both sensory and motor tasks which need to work together to keep a person balanced. When a problem occurs either in the sensory or motor systems, a person feels unbalanced.

The sensory side of balance has three systems which work together:

  • Somatosensory/proprioception - this is your body's pressure sensors
  • Vision - able to see if you are aligned properly with your surroundings
  • Vestibular system - inside your inner ear to detect angular movement and velocity changes

If there is a miscommunication between these three systems, the person will experience dizziness. The vestibular system is a set of fluid-filled tubes inside your ear which respond to angular changes of your head (nodding or shaking your head stimulates this system.) There are a variety of problems which can occur within the vestibular system, and our skilled physical therapists can evaluate these difficulties.

As our sensory and motor systems need to work together to maintain our balance, it is important to evaluate these systems separately when someone is having a balance disorder. With the use of our NeuroCom BalanceMaster system, we can perform a thorough evaluation and assessment of the performance of your sensory and motor systems as they work to maintain your balance.

If you are experiencing poor balance or dizziness, please call our Maple Valley office at 425-413-4425 to set up an appointment or speak with your doctor.
