What is Hand Therapy?

Hand therapy, as defined by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission in 2008, is "the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle." Hand therapists merge both occupational and physical therapy theory and practice to create a discipline that utilizes comprehensive knowledge of the structures of the upper extremity coupled with function and activity.

Hand Therapists:

  • Utilize specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment of the upper extremity
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction restore function and/or reverse the progression of upper limb pathology.
  • Assist patients with upper limb problems to enhance their ability to execute valued tasks and participate fully in life.

Hand therapists are highly trained professionals who play an integral role in the rehabilitation of upper limb problems. Through advanced continuing education, clinical experience and independent study, these professionals have become highly proficient in working with patients and physicians to provide appropriate rehabilitation. Some hand therapy practitioners have met the standards set forth by the Hand Therapy Certification Committee and have earned the designation of Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). The CHT designation demonstrates that the practitioner has achieved the highest level of competency in the profession and stays up to date with practice within the field. Of the 4,976 CHTs currently practicing in the United States, 3 practice in Outpatient Physical Therapy clinics.

Hand therapy is covered by federal, state and private insurance plans.
